چکیده
Abstract Iconicity in language is receiving increased attention from many fields, but our understanding of iconicity only as good the measures we use to quantify it. We collected for 304 Japanese words English-speaking participants, using rating and guessing tasks. The included ideophones (structurally marked depictive words) along with regular lexical items similar semantic domains (e.g., fuwafuwa ‘fluffy’, jawarakai ‘soft’). two correlated, speaking their validity. However, received consistently higher ratings than other items, even when guessed at same accuracies, suggesting task more sensitive cues like structural markedness that frame iconic. These did not always guide participants meanings task, they make them confident guesses, were wrong. Consistently poor results reflect role different experiences play shaping construals iconicity. Using multiple tandem allows us explore interplay between these external factors. To facilitate this, introduce a reproducible workflow creating tasks standardised wordlists, while also making improvements robustness, sensitivity discriminability previous approaches.

Pictorial iconicity had no effect on referential confusion whe...
